Writing skills are foundational to the Big History Project. We know that good writing requires regular practice and clear, consistent feedback—but this isn’t always easy with the time pressures teachers face. In this session, BHP teachers share how they’re using BHP’s essay-scoring service, BHP Score, to help students improve their writing. They’ll also share how they use other BHP supports—a wide variety of texts, Investigations (similar to DBQs), and reading exercises—to support students with both literacy and historical thinking aims. With a combination of technology-based tools (BHP Score, texts, videos) and traditionally excellent writing techniques, this session aims to give teachers and understanding of the Big History Project’s approach to reading and writing and what this might look like in their classroom.
